The Trump administration denied Illinois’ request for FEMA disaster aid, leaving Cook County without federal help after August's battering storms and tornadoes.

An approval would have opened federal programs and funding to individual storm victims and local governments to help with repair and cleanup.

FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton said that federal help was “not warranted” in a letter dated Oct. 7, according to Gov. JB Pritzker’s office. The state's request also covered Champaign, Ford, Fulton, McLean, Tazewell, Vermilion and Will counties.

“Our communities are still picking up the pieces from the destruction caused by severe weather this summer,” Pritzker said in a statement. “Donald Trump should never play politics with their homes, businesses, and infrastructure.”

He said the state will file an appeal.

Severe weather struck Cook County July 27 and returned with tornadoes and straight-line winds in August, devastating parts of Tinley Park, Orland Park, Country Club Hills, Homewood, Flossmoor, Glenwood, [Lansing](https://thelansingjournal.org/2026/08/12/nws-confirms-derecho-ef-1-tornado-in-lansing-as-mayor-declares-emergency/?ref=citizengrit.news) and other south suburbs.

On Tuesday, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle [pledged $8 million](https://www.citizengrit.news/cook-county-commits-8-million-to-clear-debris-from-august-storms/) to clear debris from south suburban communities after issuing a disaster proclamation in August.

“No community should have to shoulder the cost of recovering from a devastating storm on its own," she said Tuesday. "When federal assistance doesn't come, Cook County will not stand by."

The county reported it so far has removed enough storm-related debris to fill 5,700 dump trucks, with more to go. WTTW reported that clean-up costs have exceeded [more than $1 million ](https://news.wttw.com/2026/10/06/cook-county-announces-8m-relief-fund-help-clear-mountains-debris-left-summer-storms?ref=citizengrit.news)in the communities.

The latest rejection marks the third for Illinois since Trump returned to office, [Capitol News Illinois](https://capitolnewsillinois.com/news/trump-administration-denies-illinois-request-for-disaster-relief-again/?ref=citizengrit.news) reported. Pritzker blamed politics for the two denials last year, a charge federal officials have rejected.

Democrats in Illinois’ congressional delegation condemned the administration's decision in statements released by Pritzker’s office. Sen. Dick Durbin claimed that Trump punishes states that did not back him in the last election. Rep. Lauren Underwood of the 14th District accused the administration of stealing taxpayer money and turning disaster relief into a political tool.

“Make no mistake: President Trump is turning his back on Illinois families when they need their government the most,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly in a statement.“Families across the state lost their homes, businesses, and power this August, and this administration just told them emergency assistance is 'not warranted.'" Kelly's district covers part of Cook County.

[Politico](https://www.politico.com/newsletters/illinoisplaybook?ref=citizengrit.news)’s Friday newsletter noted the timing of Ohio’s approval, which came ahead of Trump’s Oct. 3 rally for Republican Sen. Jon Husted as 15 other requests remained unanswered. [CBS Chicago](https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/trump-denies-fema-aid-illinois-august-storms-pritzker-lahood/?ref=citizengrit.news) reported that Trump approved federal help for Indiana after the same storm system moved east into that state. Politico also reported that Trump approved requests from Hawaii and New Hampshire, showing party affiliation alone may not explain the pattern.

[A Politico analysis](https://www.eenews.net/articles/its-three-times-harder-for-blue-states-to-get-disaster-funding-under-trump/?ref=citizengrit.news) found that Trump has approved 23 percent of disaster requests from Democratic-led states in his second term, in contrast with 89 percent for Republican-led states. Before this term, no president since Ronald Reagan approved fewer than two-thirds of requests from Democratic-led states, the analysis showed.

The White House has denied any political motivation.

Republicans in Illinois have joined the push for FEMA approval. [Capitol News Illinois](https://capitolnewsillinois.com/news/trump-administration-denies-illinois-request-for-disaster-relief-again/?ref=citizengrit.news) reported that the full congressional delegation — three Republicans among them — signed a letter urging Trump to approve Pritzker’s request. Politico reported that Rep. Darin LaHood, a Republican, called on Trump to approve the relief request Wednesday night.
